TaylorMade Kalea Premier Driver
The flagship club in the new Kalea Premier line is the driver. For those of you who liked the look and feel of the Stealth, TaylorMade has created a very similar solution here, but with a few changes geared towards women golfers.
Key Features
Maximum Forgiveness
I think the new TaylorMade Kalea Premier driver is the most advanced driver for women today. TaylorMade repositioned the Inertia Generator more towards the heel of the head, which helps launch the ball off the tee. This, along with the center of gravity (CG) being low and back in the head, helps to ensure maximum forgiveness on every drive.
The Kalea Premier driver also includes new Twist Face technology, a revolutionary face design. The face of the driver is curved in a way that it helps ensure straight shots, even on off-center strikes.
Lightweight Design
The Kalea Premier driver is incredibly lightweight, allowing faster swing speeds at maximum impact. The driver is crafted from lightweight forged aluminum, and the crown and sole are made from carbon which cuts down on the weight of the head by quite a bit. This is a similar design to the new Stealth driver, which is geared more to men.
The Kalea Premier driver also has a 22g steel back rear weight, which adds to the forgiveness and launch of the driver. The design of this driver is incredibly appealing and inspires confidence in every shot.
Thru-Slot Speed Pocket
Like their other clubs, TaylorMade has included their patented Thru-Slot Speed Pocket. This allows them to maximize ball speeds and offer even more forgiveness on low-face strikes.
Most women’s drivers are created for moderate swing speeds, but TaylorMade pushes that to the limit with this driver. TaylorMade has really focused on giving lightweight speed without much effort.
Pricing
The TaylorMade Kalea Premier driver can be purchased on its own for $449.99 USD or comes included in the complete set.
It is available in left and right hands and comes in a 12.5-degree loft for optimal launch off the tee. Also included is a slick white/blue head cover that nicely matches the driver’s colors.
TaylorMade Kalea Premier Fairway Woods
Kalea Premier also features a set of fairway woods which are designed to help female golfers get great launch, even if you have a slower swing speed.
Key Features
V-Steel Sole Design
This type of material helps promote forgiveness at impact, but it also helps to reduce friction with the ground at impact for a smooth connection. The Kalea woods will glide through all sorts of lies and provides excellent versatility out of the rough.
The weight distribution on the sole helps push the center of gravity lower, which will have the ball exploding off the face of the club.
Ultra Lightweight Head
The Kalea Premier Fairway woods all have a carbon crown which helps lower the head’s overall weight. The face is also 37% larger than the original Kalea fairway woods, which helps to inspire confidence in every shot.
Despite this added volume in the larger club, the woods don’t feel any heavier than normal. I credit this to the carbon sole, which allows TaylorMade to reposition the weight on the club.
Loft Options
TaylorMade is offering three different lofts, all with the same lightweight technology. You can get a 3-wood (17-degree loft), 5-wood (20.5-degree loft), or 7-wood (23-degree loft).
All three woods have 180cc volume, which helps to provide consistency on every single shot. These clubs are versatile and can be used on any hole and shot.
Pricing
The TaylorMade Kalea Premier Fairway woods can be purchased separately for $249.99 USD.
TaylorMade Kalea Premier Rescue
To help women get easier launch, TaylorMade has added a few hybrid woods into the lineup instead of long irons, which can be tough to control.
Key Features
Versatility
TaylorMade completely re-did the rescue hybrids for the Kalea Premier line, which is why they are highly versatile clubs. They can be hit off the fairway, from out of the rough, off the tee, and even out of fairway sand bunkers if needed.
Each hybrid is equipped with the V Steel sole design, which helps launch the ball from any lie.
Low Profile Head Design
The low-profile head shape of the Kalea Premier Rescue allows you to sit the head flush on the ground and tight to the golf ball. This provides confidence in every shot.
TaylorMade also made the face larger than previous Kalea Rescue clubs, which helps overall ball-striking.
Loft Options
Four different Kalea Premier Rescue hybrids are available, each offering a little difference in the loft.
The 4-hybrid comes in a 23-degree loft, the 5-hybrid in a 27-degree loft, the 6-hybrid in a 31-degree loft, and the 7-hybrid in a 35-degree loft.
Pricing
The TaylorMade Kalea Premier Rescue hybrids can be purchased separately for $199.99 USD.
TaylorMade Kalea Premier Irons
TaylorMade uses premium materials throughout the new Kalea Premier irons, appealing to regular golfers who don’t mind spending the money for good quality.
Key Features
Cap Back Design
TaylorMade utilizes a brand new Cap Back design on their Kalea Premier irons, allowing them to maximize distance, forgiveness, and launch. It also helps to reduce vibrations in hand and helps to deliver a nice, premium feels on every single shot.
Perimeter Weighting
Included in the Kalea Premier Irons is what’s called Inverted Cone Technology. It varies the thickness of the club face, which helps optimize the ball’s launch off the sweet spot.
These irons are incredibly forgiving but not too clunky looking when lined up to the ball. They also include TaylorMade’s Thru-Slot Speed Pocket, which helps maximize ball speeds and swing speeds.
Iron Options
You can go with many options for the Kalea Premier Irons. You can purchase 6-iron through Sand Wedge, with a few different options depending on your budget and needs.
The wedges are also designed to fit nicely in the set, and they feature a wide camber on the bottom of each wedge to quickly get the ball into the air.
Pricing
There are a few different price options for the Kalea Premier Irons. You can purchase a 5-piece set individually for $599 USD. You can also buy the 6-iron to pitching wedge, approach wedge, and sand wedge separately for $119 USD each.
TaylorMade Kalea Spider Mini Putter
Taking some design cues from its Spider GT lineup of putters, the Kalea Spider Mini putter is a modern mallet that fits in with the rest of the family.
Key Features
Pure Roll Insert
The TaylorMade Kalea Spider Mini includes the famous Pure Roll insert that TaylorMade has on all of its putters. The face insert is extremely soft, and the grooves help promote a forward roll towards your target on every putt.
Compact Head Design
The Kalea Spider Mini putter has a 10% smaller head than a typical Spider putter. This is because it offers a bit more stability and forgiveness on mis-hits.
Lightweight Shaft
The shaft included in the Kalea Spider Mini putter is a low torque, lightweight graphite shaft. The shaft is only 70g which helps to reduce the overall club weight by 40g. This helps keep the pendulum motion strong and compact on every single putt.
Pricing
The TaylorMade Kalea Spider Mini putter can be purchased separately for $279.99 USD.
TaylorMade Kalea Premier Complete Set
The complete set for the Kalea Premier golf clubs is an 11-piece set with:
- driver
- 5-wood
- 5-hybrid
- 6-hybrid
- 7-iron to pitching wedge
- SW
- putter
- bag
This set is the most expensive, coming in at $1,699 USD.
As I went over, you can also purchase the clubs individually if you wish. If you are looking at getting a complete set, the best deal is the 11-piece set.
If you are only looking for a few clubs out of the set, you are better off purchasing individually and adding to your own bag.
TaylorMade Kalea Premier vs. Kalea 3
There isn’t much difference between the Kalea Premier line and the previous Kalea 3 line. I noticed a couple of minor differences and will go over them below.
Driver
The driver received the most significant differences between the Kalea Premier and Kalea 3. In the Kalea 3, it was a fundamental, bland-looking driver. It included the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket, but that was about it.
There was no weighting of any kind.
When lined up to the ball, there is a small chrome strip at the back of the driver, but that didn’t add anything to the performance. The sound and feel of the Kalea 3 driver left much to be desired.
In the Kalea Premier Driver, there is much more noticeable technology added. At first glance, you can tell that the Twist Face Technology is there. The face of the driver is ever so curved, which helps correct the face angle on mishits.
Also noticeable was the 22g rear weight at the back of the driver’s head. When swinging the club, you can tell that weight is there, and the ball absolutely launches off the face.
The sound and feel are also quite improved from the Kalea 3 model.
Club Face Size
The biggest difference I noticed was the size of the club face in the Kalea Premier Fairway Woods compared to the Kalea 3 Fairway Woods. The face on the Kalea Premier is quite noticeable larger.
They say that it is 37% larger than previous models, and they mean that.
I think that this is a good thing because a larger club face helps inspire confidence in your shot. It seems like the sweet spot is larger and lets you swing without worry.
There aren’t many changes from the Kalea 3 to the Kalea Premier line, but the few improvements are key. They are designed to help women get easier launch, more speed, and more distance. If you didn’t get in on the Kalea 3 lineup, now is the perfect time to upgrade to the Premier line.
What I Like About the TaylorMade Kalea Premier Lineup
First off, I loved the look of the entire set. The blue and white color stood out, and it was nice to see that the clubs weren’t just painted pink and released like that. Most women golfer’s I know are annoyed at women’s golf clubs because they seem pink and lightweight with no other golf technology added.
This was not the case with the Kalea Premier line.
The technology stood out to me, especially the driver and the hybrids. Refined weight distribution is a big win here to get more club head speed. These clubs were extremely easy to hit.
The fairway woods have extremely large club faces, and the hybrids were easy to hit from anywhere on the course. TaylorMade is great at giving options, which is precisely what they did, as there is a club for everyone.
The Spider putter adds the same technology as the overall Spider GT lineup, which is welcome. I’m not sure they needed a Kalea branded putter, but it does make sense in the bigger picture of the whole family.
The Kalea Premier line is suited to a specific range of women’s golfers. They won’t be great for experienced women’s golfers with higher swing speeds, but are more suited to the slower to moderate swing speeds.
Overall, the Kalea Premier line is a step in the right direction for all women golfers.
What I Didn’t Like About the TaylorMade Kalea Premier Lineup
The only thing I didn’t like about the new Kalea Premier lineup was the irons. They are advertised to have some other technology, but it was hard to tell when hitting. The ball came off nice, but it still seemed like something was missing.
The price is high, but you must remember that these are brand new, and all brand-name golf clubs will come at a premium. If you want to upgrade, you should look at these.
Lastly, this may be nit-picking, but you might find it hard to keep the head covers clean. They are mainly white with a small amount of blue, so if you are the type of golfer who throws the head cover into the back of the cart or onto the ground during your shot, they may get dirty quickly.
Conclusion
There’s a lot to like in the new TaylorMade Kalea Premier lineup. You can tell that additional forgiveness was key throughout the product development. These new clubs are easy to hit.
TaylorMade found a real winner with their new carbonwood technology in the Stealth Driver and the addition of it to Kalea Premier is key.
The price is a bit steep overall, but you can’t argue with good tour-proven technology.
