Essential Golf Equipment for Your Vacation
Golf Clubs (Full Set)
When golf vacation packing, you first need to remember your actual golf clubs. You can rent them at the course, but if the trip’s focus is on golf, it makes more sense financially and logistically to bring your own full set.
If you are flying on an airplane, double-check the airline’s rules for bringing sporting equipment. For example, budget airlines won’t let you take oversized luggage like golf clubs with the base ticket price.
Sturdy Golf Travel Bag
If you plan on doing more than one golf trip in the future, invest in a good golf travel bag for your golf clubs. One with padding, especially a hardcover at the top, and wheels are a lifesaver. This will protect your gear and make lugging it through the airport much more accessible.
You also won’t have to worry about your clubs being damaged. Having a good travel bag also helps you plan your next golf trip.
Golf Balls (6-12 Sleeves)
Packaging more golf balls than you think you’ll need is better. You won’t have to worry about not having enough. Having enough golf balls will also save you money when you buy some on your golf trip. Losing a ball or two happens, especially on unfamiliar golf courses.
I like to plan for four or five golf balls each round. This should be enough if your golf game is off!
Tees
I recommend packing plenty of various-sized golf tees on your golf trip. This ensures you have the correct size, whether you are teeing off with a driver or an iron.
Tees take up little to no space in your golf bag, so having a few extra is always suitable.
Ball Markers and Divot Tools
Ball markers and divot repairs are small items can easily slip your mind but are important golf trip essentials. They allow you to follow golf etiquette rules and tidy the course.
Both of these items are probably already in your golf bag, so just double a double-check before you leave.
Golf Gloves (Including Rain Gloves)
Your golf glove can wear out quickly, especially in climates you aren’t used to. Bring an extra pair of golf gloves that neatly slide into any pocket of your golf bag.
Pack rain gloves in case you run into some bad weather during your golf round.
Footwear and Accessories
Comfortable Golf Shoes
Packing a comfortable pair of golf shoes is one of the top essentials on any golf vacation. I like to put mine in the bigger, long pouch on the side of my golf bag, so they won’t get squished.
Extra Spikes for Golf Shoes
If you don’t have spikeless golf shoes, consider packing replaceable spikes. It’s a small thing that can help secure your footing on unfamiliar courses.
High-Quality Athletic Socks
The right socks make all the difference. They can prevent blisters and keep your feet comfortable throughout your rounds.
Having fresh socks for each round is also an absolute must.
Golf Towels
I recommend packing a good microfiber golf towel or two on any golf trip. Having one to clean clubs and another to sweat or dry off does wonders in wet conditions. These should easily fit into the long pocket of your golf bag.
I like to buy a golf towel from the pro shop any where I go as a nice memento.
Umbrella
An umbrella is a must-have in your golf bag for any golf trip. You never know when the weather will turn, so having that protection when needed is great.
Most golf bags also have specific umbrella slots, meaning you aren’t taking up any additional space by packing them.
GPS or Rangefinder
Bringing a golf GPS device or range finder can help save you strokes, especially on golf courses you’re playing for the first time. Some courses have GPS on the carts, but having your own distance device is handy for checking out distances around the golf course.
Bluetooth Speaker
If the course permits, a small Bluetooth speaker can add fun to your golf round. Plus, a speaker is awesome to have in your hotel room before and after your rounds.
Golf Attire for Every Weather
Packing the right golf clothes means being ready for whatever the weather throws. It is important to review each golf course’s specific dress code so you can pack the correct attire.
Here are my essentials to pack:
Moisture-wicking golf shirts to keep you comfortable on warm days. These shirts will help you stay cool and dry no matter what.
A mix of golf shorts and pants so you’re covered for sunny skies and cooler mornings
A specific pair of rain pants will also come in handy.
A lightweight jacket or pullover and proper rain gear are also must-haves for unexpected weather changes. This can help you stay dry and make a round more enjoyable.
A golf hat or visor to shield your face from the sun
Pack a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes and improve visibility on bright days.
With these golf clothing essentials, you’ll look sharp and be prepared for all types of weather.
Sun Protection and Health Essentials
Sun protection and health essentials are as crucial as your golf gear when on the course all day.
I recommend packing sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. You can also pack lip balm with SPF to keep your lips from drying out. After-sun cream or aloe vera can soothe your skin after long hours in the sun and help treat any unexpected sunburns.
Pack some pain relievers and athletic tape for aches or minor injuries because it’s better to have them and not need them than the other way around. Lastly, bug repellent is a lifesaver if you play in areas where mosquitoes or other pests are a problem.
These items ensure you stay comfortable, healthy, and ready to play golf.
Off-Course Clothing and Accessories
Your golf vacation isn’t just about time on the golf course; you’ll also want to be prepared for off-course activities.
Pack some smart casual attire for dining out or exploring the local nightlife. This could include polo shirts or button-downs with nice pants and casual shoes. Bring comfortable casual wear like shorts, T-shirts, or leggings for relaxing downtime.
If your destination includes a pool or beach, remember your swimwear and a pair of flip-flops for easy, laid-back footwear. These golf trip essentials will prepare you for your entire golf trip.
Travel Tips and Logistics
Planning the logistics of your golf trip is just as important as your golf trip packing list. Start by researching your airline’s rules for transporting golf clubs. Some charge extra fees, while others have specific requirements on bag size.
There are a few things to keep in mind to keep your clubs safe:
Consider adding a GPS tracker (Apple Air Tag) to your travel bag
If you are paranoid, unscrew the club heads before packing to reduce the chance of damage. Your longer clubs, such as your driver and fairway woods, are more susceptible to damage, so if you can remove them, it eliminates that risk.
You may also have to bring proof of your golf handicap, as some courses require it for booking tee times. This is not always the case, but it’s a good idea to keep in mind.
Lastly, pack small bills for tips and minor expenses, as they come in handy for caddies, cart staff, or last-minute purchases.
Wellness and Recovery Items
A golf vacation can tax your body, so packing a few wellness and recovery items is smart. A portable massage gun can work wonders on sore muscles after a long day on the course, while stretch bands are perfect for loosening up before your round or staying limber throughout your trip.
A compact foam roller is another great addition for targeting tight spots and speeding recovery. Lastly, a basic first aid kit ensures you’re ready to handle minor scrapes, blisters, or other small injuries. This should easily fit into your golf bag and can come in handy.
If you can’t fit these items in your bag, look up your hotel or AirBNB and see if they offer any of these things.
Entertainment and Social Essentials
A golf vacation is also about enjoying downtime and making memories with friends. Bring a deck of card games for relaxing evenings with your group, as it’s a great way to unwind and bond.
Beer koozies are perfect for keeping your drinks cold while celebrating a great round. Snacks and a thermos flask are handy for mid-round energy boosts or quiet moments on the go.
Lastly, a charging brick for your devices ensures your phone or GPS doesn’t die when you need it most.
Final Golf Packing Tips
Before heading out on your golf vacation, take a few final steps to ensure you’re fully prepared.
Start by double-checking the weather forecast for your destination so you can adjust your clothing and gear as needed. A good rain hat and rain pullover are key even in summer months. To avoid surprises, verify the dress codes for the courses you’ll be playing.
Go over your golf trip packing list to ensure all essential items are included, from clubs and clothing to accessories and recovery gear. Finally, pack everything in an easily accessible order, keeping items like your travel documents, golf gloves, and sunscreen within reach.
A little organization can save a lot of hassle on the first tee and help you focus on enjoying your golf weekend.
